A Story of Unimaginable Resilience: Tihtina’s Journey on EyitaTV
ADDIS ABABA — In a deeply moving interview on EyitaTV, a young Ethiopian woman named Tihtina shared a harrowing account of survival that has left viewers profoundly inspired. Currently a second-year Social Work student at the Ethiopian Catholic University - St. Thomas Aquinas (ECUSTA), Tihtina opened up about the trauma of losing her hand in a severe accident and how she faced it with unyielding faith.
"I Was Aware..."
The tragic event occurred in 2016 E.C. while Tihtina was traveling from Hossana for a church program. The public transport bus she was riding lost its brakes and violently rolled over near Ziway. Because she was seated right next to the emergency exit, she was thrown out of the window as the heavy vehicle tumbled.
The most striking revelation of the interview came when Tihtina detailed the immediate aftermath. She recalled being completely conscious, stating she was aware from the very moment she hit the ground. Instead of excruciating pain, she described feeling a profound numbness initially, even though her arm, flesh, and bones were critically crushed.
The Road to Recovery
After receiving initial first aid at Ziway Hospital, a lack of O-negative blood necessitated a stressful transfer to Adama General Hospital. There, foreign doctors assessed her severe injuries and determined that amputation was unavoidable. Tihtina, who understood their English conversation, was fully conscious and listening as the decision to cut off her hand was finalized.
Despite the shocking news, her psychological resilience was astonishing. Before heading into the two-hour surgery, she simply asked the priests who had arrived to pray for her, having already made peace with her new reality.
"From the moment God brought this upon me, I accepted it," she stated gracefully, adding that she viewed the trial as a gift from God meant to strengthen her and inspire others to be strong.
Living Fully at ECUSTA
Today, Tihtina doesn't just speak as a survivor; she lives actively and joyfully on the ECUSTA campus. Her roommate, Amen, a medical student, marveled on-camera at how Tihtina takes the lead in keeping their dorm completely immaculate and caring for her friends. She refuses to let her physical loss limit her independence or her ability to support those around her.
A Lesson in Grace
EyitaTV has provided a vital platform for this incredible story. Tihtina stands as a beacon of hope for anyone facing their own seemingly insurmountable challenges. She proves that true courage lies in embracing life's obstacles with gratitude, leaning on faith, and refusing to be defined by tragedy.
